Ricker Than Fiction is a commentary on franchise fatigue and AI's attempt to fix it to give the fans what they want...even though they will complain anyway. I got to design James Gunns model for the episode which made for a fun animated Hollywood villain. The first concept is a rough first pass I did on Baron Thistles headquarters that evolved a bit further than this but stayed within the general setup here with thistle missile launchers, half organic cactus and half military fortress. Next is Baron Thistle, Rob Schrab had an initial rough sketch that I elaborated further on. The Weed Minion, Baron Thistles disposable organic henchmen came together through many rounds of drawings with the help of Doug Olsen, Adam Burnier and myself. Lastly is a rough color script I put together for a sequence Doug Olsen boarded of RaM getting digitized into the movie.

RICK AND MORTY - Season 8 Skateboard Art
At last the season 8 crew skateboard deck! It's based on a fun sequence from Ricker Than Fiction that I art directed. I pitched multiple images that would have required a lot more elbow grease but we landed on this one that appeared more graphic and used art directly from the episode. This was born from the director Doug Olsen's boards, character design by Brad Lewis, and color by Corey Boothe. I tweaked a few things and helped assemble it but really this one is from the crew, to the crew. Thanks to Welcome Skateboards for another beauty!

RICK AND MORTY - The Rick, The Mort and The Ugly
Holy smokes! I couldn't wait for this beast of an episode to air, beautifully directed by Brian Kaufman. I never had the chance to work on a western themed episode yet so I researched plenty of westerns from John Ford movies, spaghetti westerns, and modern takes on westerns to get into the spirit. This was a massive undertaking for our crew that we somehow pulled off thanks to everyones hard work. The first image is a concept I did for Mutant Morty. The background concepts were designed by Liza Epps, and Lease Eisele. I did a rough color pass over them to experiment with the palette themes as a jumping off point in order to help launch the color team in the right direction. Lastly, I helped Brent Noll redesign the Rick Trafficker ship to give it that salvaged scrap wreckage kind of vibe along with a rough color comp. This was by far the toughest episode of the year for my team that felt like an uphill battle the whole way but our guys met the challenge head on and crushed it. This quote summed it up pretty well "Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway." - John Wayne.
